Domestic violence can be defined as a pattern of behavior in any relationship that is used to gain or maintain power and control over an intimate partner.
Abusive relationships can be very complex and can include a lot more than physical violence. What we often don’t hear about is the pattern of control, intimidation and verbal abuse that occur in abusive relationships. Though these things are harder to identify because we often don’t recognize them, they are equally dangerous.
Domestic violence can happen to anyone regardless of race, age, sexual orientation, religion or gender. It can happen to couples who are married, living together or who are dating. As of recent reports, 1 in 4 women will experience domestic violence during her lifetime and over 3 million children witness domestic violence in their homes.
