Angels of Hope Orphanage

During my stay in Kenya, I have been volunteering in the orphanage Angels of Hope. It is located in Kibera, one of the largest slums in the world, and takes care of 40 children affected with HIV (either because they have the disease or they lost their parents to AIDS). I have been working on Sundays with a group of 12 smart and sweet kids eager to learn, and have witnessed the lack of learning materials.

Regynnah Awino is an amazing woman who started the orphanage in her own house in Kibera, taking care of orphans that she saw in her neighborhood. Angels of Hope exists because of her big heart and love for children. She has managed to have a school in the orphanage, to feed the children, and to take care of them every day, but they need a lot of financial support. Currently all people working in the orphanage, including the teacher, are volunteers.

We are doing this campaign to buy some learning materials for the children of Angels of Hope. They love to read but they have few old books piled in a chair, they love to draw and write but they have to share the small pencils and the only eraser available, they love colorful things but they don't have any colored pencils or crayons to color their drawings. 

This is the list of items that, according to the teacher and the caregiver, will help them learn better during this academic year and will make them very happy:

- 1 blackboard

- 1 bookcase

- Story books 

- Pencils and sharpeners

- Colored pencils

- Erasers

- Notebooks

- Scissors and glue

Durante mi estadía en Kenya he estado trabajando como voluntaria en el orfanato Angels of Hope. El orfanato está en Kibera, uno de los asentamientos humanos más grandes del mundo, y cuida a 40 niños afectados con VIH. He estado trabajando los domingos con un grupo de 12 niños dulces e inteligentes que tienen muchas ganas de aprender, y he sido testigo de la falta de materiales de enseñanza-aprendizaje en el orfanato. 

Regynnah Awino es una mujer increíble que empezó el orfanato en su propia casa en Kibera, cuidando a los niños huérfanos que veía en su barrio. Angels of Hope existe gracias a su gran corazón y amor por los niños. Ella ha logrado tener una escuela en el orfanato y alimentar y cuidar a los niños todos los días, pero necesitan mucha ayuda económica. Actualmente todas las personas que trabajan en el orfanato, incluida la profesora, son voluntarias.

Estamos haciendo esta campaña para comprar algunos materiales para que los niños de Angels of Hope puedan aprender mejor. A ellos les encanta leer pero sólo tienen unos pocos libros viejos apilados en una silla, les encanta escribir y dibujar pero tienen que compartir los lápices pequeños y el único borrador disponible, les encantan los colores pero no tienen ningún lápiz de color o crayola para pintar sus dibujos.
