Books and Supplies for students of Detroit Public Schools

When children succeed in school, it is often an indicator that their needs are being met in other areas of their lives. The shockingly low standardized test scores and graduation rates for students in the majority of the Detroit public schools are a sign of dysfunction across institutions meant to support children. It has been shown that poor educational systems are one of the root causes of systemic poverty. In Detroit, students are being held captive to the systems of poverty by failures in both their schools and in their neighborhoods.  Comparing Detroit students’ test scores to scores of students statewide and in urban districts nationwide, it is clear the Detroit public schools are in crisis.

LutheranHANDS will be supplying school bags and other supplies while the Gathering will be supplying Summer Reading Packets (books and other reading materials) from Scholastic.  Together, we will host an opportunity for Gathering participants to sort and pack the school bags at the Interaction Center during the week of the Gathering.  Not only will your donation go to help the students of Detroit but Gathering participants will have the ability to get hands on with giving.
