It is not uncommon for Ugandan students to walk 5 kilometers to and from school each day. However, this year due to COVID-19 their schools are closed. As we begin our school year in the United States, we have much to be grateful for even if the circumstances with which our students are returning to school are less than ideal. Let's use this event as an opportunity to come together to celebrate our schools and our teachers and walk in solidarity with those students and teachers whose schools are still closed.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Great Schools Uganda, a 501(c)3 dedicated to creating high quality educational opportunities for the children of Uganda. Our goal is to build a new primary school in the town of Mityana that, once built, will be self-sustaining and a pillar of excellence in the community. Funds raised in 2020 will also be used for our Teacher Relief Fund - a program designed to provide financial relief to Ugandan teachers who are jobless while schools are closed due to COVID-19.
