Continuing Education for an Afghan College Student

From Lauren Jones

From N: "I was finally fulfilling my dream of completing university and I just learned my scholarship has been cut. I have been told I have one week to find a way to pay the fees, or I'll be sent back to Afghanistan."

Since childhood, I have dreamed of becoming a doctor and helping people in my country. I worked hard, completed my schooling in Afghanistan, and earned a scholarship to study medicine. It felt like my dream was finally coming true—I couldn’t wait for the day I would wear my white coat and save lives.

But everything changed when the Taliban took over Afghanistan. Girls were banned from education, and my medical studies came to an abrupt end after three years. My dreams were crushed. For six long months, I fought to find a way out. After many visa rejections, I was finally able to travel to Rwanda, where I worked as a teaching assistant at a boarding school.

While in Rwanda, I applied to many universities, hoping for another chance at education. One day, I received an email that gave me hope again—my old scholarship program had found me a place to study in a new country. But there was one condition: I could no longer study medicine. It was the hardest decision of my life, but I had no other choice. I changed my field of study and moved to Oman to start over.

After everything I had been through, I finally felt like I was rebuilding my life. I completed my foundation program and was just two days away from starting my first semester in Accounting and Finance when I received devastating news—my scholarship had been canceled. The entire program was funded by USAID, and when USAID was shut down, all scholarships under it, including mine, were canceled. I was told I had to return to Afghanistan by the end of the week.

I am now at a crossroads, fighting once again to keep my education alive. Going back to Afghanistan is not an option—it would mean the end of my education, my future, and everything I have worked so hard for. I refuse to let that happen.

I am raising funds to continue my studies and secure my future. Any amount, no matter how small, will bring me one step closer to staying in school and rebuilding my life. If you cannot donate, please share my story—it might reach someone who can help.
