August 23rd symbolizes the number of additional days black women must work to make what a man earns, on average, in salary in a year. This project will be presented by a cohort of all women musicians and put a spotlight on the issue of equal pay for equal work.
Most people are aware that, on average, women's take home salary is less than what a man makes. What is lesser known is that this disparity is even sharper by ethnicity. While a white women's earnings are 79% of a man's average salary, African American women only make 63% (see the National Organization Women for complete demographic information). In classical music, the representation of African Americans, let alone women, is also bleak. In 2015, only 4% of those employed by American orchestras, both men and women, were musicians of color.
Help us bring attention to this issue and support your local musicians by lending your financial backing and support!
