I'm using the opportunity of my goodbye party to raise some $$ for two organizations I care a lot about, MIBF (the Midwest Immigrant Bond Fund) and NISGUA (the Network in Solidarity with the People of Guatemala).
MIBF is a volunteer-run rotating community fund that bonds immigrants from across the midwest out of detention. The appeal here is simple: it just takes about $1500 for somebody to be released from detention and return back to family + community. I spent this past year as a board member, and was deeply inspired by this important freedom work.
NISGUA is a transnational solidarity network that works closely with indigenous communities and justice organizations across Guatemala. NISGUA accompaniers monitor, stand witness, and build solidarity with indigenous land defenders fighting corporate mines and dams and witnesses and justice organizations fighting for accountability from the Guatemalan governement. I'll be joining NISGUA as an accompanier for the next 6 months.
Please consider giving $18, $36, orwhatever feels comfortable to you to these powerful organizations!
