Family Home Legacy
My name is Cynthia Scull. I am sixty-four years old, and this is my story. I am a mother of four, and have five grandkids and a house full of pets. In January of 2023 I lost my youngest daughter. I was devastated. She left two teenagers behind, my grandson and granddaughter. They have been staying with me ever since. I live in North Portland, not too far from the St. John's bridge. My house was built in 1914. It is a two-story home with a pitched roof that has been in our family since 1941, for three generations now. My grandmother was the first owner, then my parents inherited the house, and now I have. I grew up in this house and so did my kids and my grandkids. We all have so many beautiful memories here.
Over the years we have done the best we can to keep the house and maintain it in good condition. It has been our family home for over eighty years now, and I hope it will be for many more years and generations to come.
Today I am reaching out to all of you hoping that you will help. The house we live in needs many repairs, but my main concern is the roof. It has not been replaced for over twenty-five years. It has been leaking for a while, and every year the heavy rain and snows have impacted the roof and the gutters. Shingles have been blown away from strong winds.
Not too long ago I discovered black mold in the bathroom caused by the leaking roof. It is frightening. Now I am very concerned about the health risk to me and my family. To replace the roof and remove the mold is very expensive. With my low income, I am unable to afford a new roof and most importantly take care of the black mold.
I'm just able to keep up with monthly expenses and have nothing left over. My kids have been a great financial support. They help with bills and repairs around the house, but they can only do so much.
I also looked into refinancing and realized that I would not be able to make the monthly payment, and could potentially lose my home.
I am here today to ask for your help. I just can't do it alone. I am truly hoping that some of you may be able to donate to help keep our family home in livable condition. It rains so much here in Portland, and I am afraid further damage could take the house beyond repair. Again, I am also deeply concerned about the mold and the health risk for me and my family.
I want to thank you for taking the time to read my story. Any donations will be much appreciated; they would bring us a step closer to replacing my roof, getting rid of the black mold, and keeping our home for the generations to come.
God Bless.
