Carlitos Paez and The Andes

“The group is an indestructible support that helps to awaken the slumbering qualities of each of its members.”

Born in Montevideo, Uruguay, in October 31, 1953. In October 13, 1972, when he was 18 years old, he embarks on a trip to Chile that would change his life forever. The plane in which Carlitos was flying, together with other 44 passengers, crashes in the heart of the Andes Mountains 4200 meters over sea level.  After ten days of hopeless search, in an environment where according to experts survival was impossible, the authorities decide to end the search and accept the fact that these people would not be coming back alive.

72 days later, when Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa cross the Andes looking for help, the world learns that 16 people have survived.

Quebracho Youth and Sports Center is a Uruguayan based non - profit organization that seeks through sports to promote education, work and transmit values.

BOXING IS PRACTICED IN QUEBRACHO, BUT IS MUCH MORE THAN A GYM.

WHAT WE DO

Quebracho was founded in May 2015 to seek equal opportunities for Uruguayan teenagers from low-income neighborhoods, that are socially and economically vulnerable, through academic support and sports.

At Quebracho, teenagers between 12 and 17 years old can participate in a variety of programs such as sports, social and recreational activities apart from education. Family dinners, cooking programs, beach tours, running marathons, clothing fairs, and other outside activities are constantly held to motivate teenagers to become part of our community.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Support and transmit values to these teenagers in every aspect of their lives. A teenager who learns to be responsible, kind, respectful, reflective, athletic, tidy, hard worker and tolerant of others, will be better prepared to insert on our society and have more professional opportunities. Being part of Quebracho, means less time spent on the streets, that can prevent robbery, drug consumption or other violent behaviors.

The feeling that we transmit of being part of something, having a routine, combined with respect, support, and discipline, is what makes Quebracho the first and/or second home to most of our members.

EDUCATION

Our members are divided into three levels based on their educational knowledge. This division allows educators to follow closely the achievements, improvements, and difficulties of each member in a personalized way according to their needs.

Teenagers receive educational support to progress in high school, University of Labour (UTU) and other studies. We also offer workshops on values and culture are held to promote their social integration.

SPORTS

Why Boxing is the main sport held in Quebracho? Boxing is taught as a way of teaching discipline, anger management, and teamwork.

However, running and other sports that demand persistence and daily dedication, are also offered in our centers to stimulate commitment and hard work.

CENTERS - COLONIA NICOLICH & AEROPARQUE

During the last years, Quebracho became a positive influence among teenagers in Colonia Nicolich. Due to the exponential growth and high demand of new members, in 2017 Quebracho acquired its second center near Aeroparque.

Currently, Quebracho counts with a total of 60 teenagers in Colonia Nicolich and 40 in Aeroparque.

INFRASTRUCTURE

We have a complete boxing gym, meeting the highest standards for the practice of this sport, a fully equipped kitchen, computers for personal use, rooms to study and/or perform their academic homework.

GODPARENT PROGRAM

As we are fully committed to the future of our members, we offer a special scholarship for outstanding students that want to study in Don Bosco, a private college that offers highly recognized academic programs. Each program costs 4,500usd per year.

Through our Godparent Program, volunteers can support economically our outstanding students to receive a better education with more job opportunities in the future.

The idea is that each “godparent” (which can be an individual person or a group of people) builds a strong relationship with each student to keep them motivated and also be in touch with their progress in class, grades, and exams.

We invite you to our dinner and collaborate with our Godparent Program to help our community have better opportunities in the future.

THANK YOU!
