It started with a request to rehome this sweet dog. In the rescue community, we hear these requests all the time...but this one was different. Akita is a 7 year old lab mix who has been a member of her family since 11 weeks old, and her owner and best friend is a 16 year old girl. And this 16 year old girl, along with her sister, baby brother, and mother, are fleeing an abusive home. They have obtained an emergency protective order, and have a matter of days to find a new place to live.
They are looking for a safe place to stay- ideally a pet-friendly, two-bedroom rental in the Independence, KY area, for $500-650/ month. If not, they will end up in a shelter, where Akita cannot go. They need to be out of their current home in the next 10 days. More than likely, the bulk of the monetary donations will go to their security deposit, so they can get into an apartment, and hopefully skip the shelter.
They also have an immediate need for grocery help- so Kroger or Walmart gift cards would be a real help. So far, we have been able to get the school supplies for the girls, and clothes for the baby brother. We have also found a foster for the dog, who can keep her until safe, permanent, pet-friendly housing is found, in hopes that the family can be reunited.
As you can imagine, this family will have needs that they haven't even imagined yet. Donations of any amount are greatly appreciated. Please contact Mandy if you would like to donate items. Thank you!
