The reality is that domestic violence exists in all communities. Yet, unfortunately, it's something that my community did not discuss while I was growing up, even though we knew it existed. The silence, and my frustration from it, made me want to do something to raise awareness on domestic violence and to encourage our community to become involved in advocating against it. That is why I decided to join the Board of Directors of the Asian/Pacific Islander Domestic Violence Resource Project (DVRP).
I am thrilled to be the Board President of such an important organization. DVRP's mission is to address, prevent and end domestic violence and sexual assault in Asian and Pacific Islander communities, while empowering survivors to rebuild their lives after abuse. DVRP's clients come from Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia, and they are able to get the support of DVRP's staff and advocates who speak over 20 different Asian languages and assist them in safety planning, finding shelter or legal assistance, attend court, and other important services.
DVRP also received the Mayor's Community Service Award from the Office on Asian and Pacific Islander Affairs in May. As shown in one of the photos above, I received the award on behalf of DVRP from the Mayor!
As the only pan-Asian organization that provides such critical services in Maryland, Virginia and D.C., DVRP needs your support! Please donate whatever amount you can to support survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault. Thank you for visiting my page!
Warmly,
Shiwali
