Hello,
My name is Andrea Pilkinton, daughter of Keith and Melissa Martin. Of Santa Fe Tennessee originally from Franklin, TN. My family has hit a hard rode with losing family members to cancer in the previous years. This year the tragic disease has hit closer to home attacking my mother at only age 47. My mother has been unemployed for the last 5 years as my father has been a electrician at Southern Quality Electric for the last 25+ years. My mother and father have not nor have they ever as far as I can remember had any kind of health insurance. They did however apply for the "Obama care" insurance that will not take effectuntil Feb 1, 2014. The doctor bills are racking up but that is a small problem compared to the problem that has just occurred.
My family and I found out today that my mother has a very rare cancer called Non Small Cell Adeno Carcinoma she tested positive for her ALK gene rearrangement which only 5% people have. With the very rare cancer that my mother has been diagnosed with there is very limited treatment that can prolong her life. Chemo is not very effective only prolonging my mothers life about 20 % where as the newer Chemo pill has greater longevity of 65%. The pill is very new and way more expensive then Chemo starting at about 45,000.00 dollars a treatment. My family has no way of paying for this treatment upfront and we cannot prolong the treatment until Feb.
Due to my mothers down hill spiral of health issues this disease has caused, my mama has had fluid drained off her lungs twice so far. She has now also developed blood clots throughout her body, both health issues can result in death. The only way to reduce or stop the fluid and blood clots is to start treatment for the cancer immediately says the Drs. at Williamson Medical Center.
My mama has now been put on a waiting list to see if she qualifies for grants to cover the pills until her insurance becomes effective. The Dr. says that patients without insurance are limited on treatment and that their hands are tied on what they are capable of doing due to expense reasons. The doctors also say that there is nothing else they can do for mama until her insurance or grants kick in . I have two older brothers Brian 30 and Michael 28 also three small grandchildren Ryder 5, Addyson 2, and Ansli 2 that are begging for some kind of mercy to help our Mother, wife, grandmother live a longer life. I have attached some information about the caner and the treatment and about the pill. please contact me back as life is short.
With Much Thanks
Andrea Pilkinton
