Keeping our homes properly climate controlled is most homeowners’ top priority.  Temperature control helps maintain comfort, protects us against the cold, and keeps electronics and other components inside the home at their most operable temperatures.  When your HVAC isn’t heating, it’s a problem that has to be addressed quickly.

Do I Need a Professional to Fix My Heater?

Not every furnace or heat pump failure requires a professional.  There are a number ofdo-it-yourself heater repairs that you can try on your own before committing to a pro.  Here’s a few:

Should your thermostat screen be blank, there are a number of issues that could be causing it.  One such issue is simply needing to change the batteries.  Pop your t-stat off the wall and see if it has batteries or not.  If it does, try changing them.  You may be surprised to find the problem was as simple as that.

Restricted air flow can wreak havoc on an AC’s performance.  Be sure to check your filter.  A dirty filter can add undue strain on a unit and negatively impact its performance.

Inside of a gas furnace, if it isn’t heating you may have lost your pilot light.  These are easy enough to ignite, but when dealing with gas and fire you need to be careful.  Make sure you fully understand how your unit works before you attempt to resolve this otherwise simple problem.

Still Having Issues?  Call a Pro!

In the event your heater still isn’t doing its job after checking these few things, be sure to call an expert.  A licensed HVAC contractor can come out and fully diagnose your problem often in minutes.  From there, most contractors will give free repair estimates in writing for you to consider.
