In our community of Hermosa Beach, one in which we hope acceptance and understanding should prevail, we are disheartened to see hate and intolerance taking root. Jessie and her wife Ashley, have become the target of harassment fueled by anti-LGBTQ rhetoric by a couple of residents/part-time residents who post, comment, and harass on social media, in person, and at City Council meetings. This behavior, ongoing for several years spanning Jessie's tenure at the Hermosa Beach Chamber of Commerce, is not just an attack on Jessie and Ashley, but on the values of kindness, equality, and respect that we in Hermosa Beach hold dear. To protect themselves, Jessie and Ashley hired a legal team and are personally pursuing a lawsuit against these individuals.
Harassment, in any form, is a threat to the fabric of our society. Whether it targets individuals based on their sexual orientation, race, religion, gender, or any other aspect of their identity, behaviors driven by hatred are vile acts that undermines our collective humanity. We must stand up to this, not just for Jessie and Ashley, but for everyone who has ever been marginalized or targeted because of who they are. While people need not agree or endorse specific views, a fundamental tenant of our society is that we can disagree civilly and lawfully.
We cannot stand idly by while speech and actions driven by hate seek to undermine the dignity and rights of any individual. This is why we are rallying together to support Jessie and Ashley in their fight for justice. The funds we raise will go directly towards covering legal fees, ensuring that they can defend themselves against this unjust harassment and set a precedent that hate will not be tolerated here in our community.
