Many physicians go the extra mile for their patients. Few go more than 2,000. For 12 years, Dr. Rafat Abonour and the Miles for Myeloma team have gone the extra mile for families affected by myeloma.

The goal is to raise awareness about this rare cancer and generate funding for research and enhanced patient care.
Each fall for over a decade, Dr. Abonour and his fellow Miles for Myeloma cyclists - a crew made up of myeloma researchers and medical caregivers, family members of patients and even a few patients themselves - set out on the annual Miles for Myeloma ride. The two-day cycling event gives myeloma patients and their loved ones the opportunity to conduct personalized fund-raising campaigns to generate awareness about the blood cancer and raise funding for IU research aimed at improving treatments for this rare disease.
Miles for Myeloma has raised more than $5million for IU multiple myeloma research and patient care since 2005. The work funded by these dollars is helping us better understand the disease and conduct clinical trials to explore new treatment options.
To help support patients affected by the disease today, Miles for Myeloma has broadened its scope and the effort will support both research at the IU Simon Cancer Center and enhanced patient care at IU Health. Myeloma is incurable, so research and enhanced care are our hope for the future.
Gifts to Miles for Myeloma support research at the IU School of Medicine via the IU Foundation and enhanced patient care via the IU Health Foundation. Gifts and donor information are shared with both foundations. If you prefer your information not be shared, please contact Lizzie Conkle at [email protected].
