More Info

Multnomah Women's Chorus is an adult treble choir located in Portland, Oregon, that performs a wide range of styles of challenging and important choral repertoire from all eras. The choir has its 10th anniversary this year, and in celebration is raising money for new Choirstools, as well as a harpist for their next concert. The Choirstools will allow them the flexibility to be positioned multiple ways, and can be easily transported for use at whatever venue they perform in. Any donation amount is helpful, but if you donate the cost of a complete Choirstool ($185 each), you may opt to have your name engraved on on. The hiring of a professional harpist is for our concert in November, to include the glorious 'Choral Hymns from the Rig Veda (Group 3)' by Gustav Holst. Holst was well known for his passionate interest in mysticism. When he became interested in the Hindu sacred books, he taught himself Sanskrit. The Rig Veda is a set of over 1000 hymns — singing the praises of the sacred plant soma and gods like Varuna, Agni, and Indra — brought by Indo-European speaking peoples into India somewhere around 1500-1000 B.C. Holst set 14 of these hymns in his four groups of Choral Hymns, which were fairly popular during his lifetime, but have seldom been performed since. In celebration of what would have been Gustav Holst's 150th birthday, Multnomah Women's Chorus will be performing this transcendent work with harp this fall.
