Never Giving Up & Never too Old

For as long as I can remember, hair has been my passion and creative outlet. I’ve been braiding hair for over 25 years, turning this talent into a side hustle that has helped me support my family in countless ways. But now, I’m ready to take the next step—pursuing my dream of becoming a licensed cosmetologist so I can open my own salon and create a legacy for myself and others.

This journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve applied to cosmetology school four times, only to face financial barriers each time. Despite holding several degrees, my financial aid has been exhausted, and I haven’t qualified for private loans, even with a cosigner. I couldn’t afford to pay out of pocket while working a low-paying job and caring for my elderly husband. But I refused to give up.

Today, I am in a slightly better place as a manager, but I can only afford to pay half of my tuition cost for cosmetology school. At 51, I hear the naysayers telling me I’m “too old” or that it doesn’t make sense to pursue this dream now. But let me tell you: I don’t believe in giving up on something that sets my soul on fire.

This is more than just about earning a license—it’s about proving that age doesn’t limit ambition and that perseverance can break down even the toughest barriers. I am determined to fulfill this dream not just for myself but to inspire others who feel like their time has passed.
