Raising children is hard. Raising exceptional children is exceptionally hard.

My name is Nora Young and I am one of the founders of Birmingham Resilience Education and Wellbeing Services (BREWS) CIC.  I have ADHD. I was not diagnosed until late adulthood having spent years struggling wit mental health issues. My children also have ADHD.

Leaving primary school teaching after  27 years, I have spent the last 5 years working with children with ADHD and with their families. I want them to know all the things I wish I had known years ago!

Meeting adults with ADHD is fascinating to children with ADHD. We can explain why we struggle with certain things and then we can look at what aids and supports can help us. I can explain to parents why traditional parenting advice does not work well with us.

ADHD folk have a different operating system. We can be labelled 'lazy', 'disruptive' and 'stupid' by people who think we are making 'bad' choices on purpose. Parents can feel blamed and shamed and can be baffled by their children's behaviour.

We want to help parents support their children. We want young people with ADHD to understand how their brain works and develop strategies that help them thrive.

Birmingham has more young people than any other city in Europe. We want to make this a city where neurodiversity is recognised, supported  and celebrated! A city where young people with ADHD can learn in non-traditional ways, embrace their unique neurodivergent identity and build on their strengths, talents and skills.

We want to run more support groups for adults and children. We want to work with individual families supporting them understanding their child's individual needs.

We are keen to offer as much as we can free of charge. Raising a child with additional needs impacts on budgets and ability to work. Many families are struggling financially. We want to be able to work with individual families when the young person is in crisis without charging.

Can you help us to reach more children and families?
