Please Help Alex Overcome Financial Barriers to Med School

Hi, my name is Alex Gutierrez. The past 3 years of my life have been dedicated to reaching one goal: attending medical school. I've always been known to have big aspirations, from being a professional soccer player, to an astronaut, and everything in between. Nonetheless, I have not worked harder for anything else than I have for becoming a physician - and was rewarded by an acceptance into California Health Sciences University in Clovis, CA. I mean it with all my heart when I say I've not experienced a better feeling in my life than the feeling I get when helping others. Currently, I work as a medical assistant an hour away from the small town where I live, at a Federally Qualified Health Center, where most patients are underinsured and underserved. Everyone is always shocked when I tell them how far I live, but I wake up extremely happy to go to work as I get the privilege of seeing dozens of relieved patients that would otherwise not have any access to health care. Even though I love my job, I feel a sense of restraint because I know I can help and advocate for patients more - that is my drive to become a physician.

However, since I have DACA status I’m ineligible for most U.S. medical schools and many scholarships, don't have access to federal student aid, and can’t apply for private loans without a U.S. cosigner. Neither of my parents are US citizens or residents and my extended family is, understandably, unwilling to apply for a loan of that amount that will accrue interest until I am done with medical school, which typically lasts 4 years. My parents are unable to help me as my mother was diagnosed with end stage kidney failure 15 years ago, so she is unable to work, and most of my father’s income goes to helping her. During college, I had similar circumstances, but I didn’t let that stop me; it took 7 years and 4 different universities to earn my bachelor’s degree, not because of my grades, but because I didn’t have the finances to pay for it.

Earning a spot in a medical school is very competitive and that is why I am doing everything I can to pay my tuition bill due June 21st, 2024. Any amount you’re able to contribute will help me pay the massive tuition cost of medical school, standing at $63,500, with any left over going to school fees, groceries, and rent.
