Starfish Initiative inspires, encourages, and prepares promising, economically disadvantaged students for college and career success.
The organization achieves this goal through the power of mentoring by pairing each of the program’s Scholars one-on-one with a college-educated Mentor. This school year, Starfish Initiative will serve approximately 350 high school students in more than 40 high schools in Marion County.
Starfish and its dedicated Mentors have had phenomenal success in improving the educational outcomes its Scholars. 100 percent of Starfish scholars that complete the program graduate high school. Of those, 98 percent enroll in a college or university. At this time, 82 percent of these students are persisting in college – compared to just 23 percent of all Indiana students, according to the Indiana Commission for Higher Education.
With a commitment to long-term, community-based mentoring, leadership training and college access programming, Starfish Initiative is uniquely placed in the community to improve graduation rates, post-secondary educational access and make a difference for students and their families — one at a time.
