All funding will go toward equipment support for the Siona vigilance team in order to more efficiently and comfortably conduct the monitoring work within the 300,000+ hectares of their ancestral territory and its boundaries in the northeastern Ecuadorian Amazon (bordering Colombia). As the Siona are constantly faced with a multitude of extractive threats (i.e. oil spills, illegal hunting, territorial invasions for agricultural expansion, and resulting deforestation), the four communities have organized to monitor their territory 2x month, which requires risky multiday trips in remote areas by canoe and by foot and often in soaking wet conditions. In addition to better rainproof gear, the team has also requested a drone to better capture and report on the extent of unpermitted deforestation on their lands. If the funding is available, a satellite phone was also requested, which will be used in case of medical emergencies in remote areas. The team would really appreciate any donation towards these initiatives - I will personally order and distribute the equipment to the team. Thanks all!
