Sweet cat Dexter is fighting for his life!

From Brother Wolf McDowell County Chapter

Dexter is a sweet, beautiful adult cat that we pulled from a local animal shelter 24 hours ago and he quickly began to crash. A vet check revealed Dexter has a urinary block and is in acute kidney failure. He needs help!

Update #1

UPDATE: We spoke to the vet this morning and the news was much more disappointing than we had hoped. Dexter was a little more alert this morning, and his phosphorus and electrolyte levels have gone down (which is good), but his kidneys have shown no improvement yet. His kidney failure is very severe and the vet is not sure that it will be reversible. Because so many of you cared and donated to help Dexter, we were able to ask the vet to keep moving forward with treatments for another 24 hours, in the hopes that his kidneys will start to flush out and work on their own again. This is the best possible shot we can give Dexter and we are heartbroken that it is not going better for him, but we are not giving up just yet. Please keep sweet Dexter in your thoughts today and send lots of positive vibes his way. We are giving it everything we've got to try to help this sweet guy...

More Info

Dexter desperately needs your help tonight! Dexter is a sweet male cat that we pulled from the McDowell County Animal Shelter only 24 hours ago. He was reported to have been pecked all over by chickens and left to linger for days before being surrendered to the shelter. Dexter was stressed at the shelter, not eating or drinking well, and generally doing poorly, so we pulled him to safety yesterday. He settled into his foster home last night and wanted nothing more than to cuddle and be loved on, despite feeling pretty bad. During the night however Dexter took a dramatic turn and started to crash. His foster mom woke up today to find Dexter almost unresponsive and unable to stand, with vomit all over his crate. He was rushed to a local vet where it's been determined that he has a severe urinary blockage and is in acute kidney failure. Dexter would not survive a few more hours without treatment.

We had to make a decision on the spot whether to euthanize Dexter or give him a chance to fight for his life. We don't know Dexter's past but we do know that he is a wonderful cat that's full of love and deserves a chance at a happy ending.

Dexter had to be sedated so the vet could insert a catheter and start to remove the blocked urine, and flush his system to try to clear his kidneys. Dexter's night in the vet hospital tonight with the life saving care they're providing will cost nearly $300. Tomorrow we will reevaluate whether his body is responding to treatment. Additional days/ nights in the hospital may run as high as $150.

WE CAN'T HELP DEXTER WITHOUT YOUR SUPPORT! No amount is too large or too small, and all funds will go directly towards the veterinary expenses to give Dexter a chance at life. Dexter may not have a "family" right now, but we need to show him that he is loved, and that there are people out there that care. Please donate towards Dexter's veterinary fund so that we can provide him the care he needs to pull through this.
