Just wanted to take an extra moment to thank all of you who so generously supported my Habitat for Humanity build in Nicaragua! Because of you, I have reached my entire fundraising goal! Thank you so very much!
I have done many different kinds of volunteer trips, from building churches as a teenager, to medical volunteering in Haiti & Honduras. But my favorite trips are building houses with Habitat For Humanity International. My husband, AJ, and I have traveled to India 2006, Bolivia 2007 & 2013, Haiti 2011 & 2012, Sri Lanka 2015 and now Nicaragua 2016.
Please support us by donating any amount of money to help us reach our goal. These trips are absolutely amazing, and we feel honored and rewarded by building alongside the homeowners and volunteer teams.

Housing need in Nicaragua
Eighty percent of the Nicaraguan population subsists on less than US$2 per day, and 43 percent on less than US$1 a day. In a country of more than five million habitants, there are many situations that affect the housing situation. Inadequate housing (both qualitative and quantitative), insufficient public investment in the housing sector, natural disasters, social and economic instability, migration from rural to urban areas and the formation of new nuclear families are all factors that take a toll on the availability of adequate housing in Nicaragua. It is estimated that each year the housing deficit in the country rises by some 30,000 homes.
Due to the low priority of housing on both political and non-profit agendas, investment in the housing sector has not been sufficient to tackle the problem.
Habitat for Humanity in Nicaragua began working in Nicaragua in 1984. Under the sponsorship of the Pro-Denominational Alliance Evangelical Council, the first construction began in the community of Germán Pomares of Chinandega. Since then, families in Jinotega, Matagalpa, Estelí, León, Chinandega, Managua, Bluefields, Carazo and Rivas have built their homes with Habitat assistance.
Since then Habitat Nicaragua has helped more than 6 000 families to improve their conditions. In the fiscal year 2013 Habitat Nicaragua: helped 804 families, 4,020 persons were benefited directly, 1,799 trained persons in community development, 1,336 people received building technical assistance and there were 617 building interventions. Habitat Nicaragua has 27 individual international donors and 641 local donors.
Global Village is Habitat for Humanity’s international volunteer program. Teams travel to over 40 countries to work alongside communities, build housing solutions, and experience local culture. Our goal is to change the lives of the people we serve, as well as the lives of the volunteers.

About Habitat for Humanity International
Driven by the vision that everyone needs a decent place to live, Habitat for Humanity began in 1976 as a grassroots effort on a community farm in southern Georgia. The housing organization has since grown to become a leading global nonprofit working in more than 1,300 communities throughout the U.S. and in more than 70 countries. Families and individuals in need of a hand up partner with Habitat for Humanity to build or improve a place they can call home. Habitat homeowners help build their own homes alongside volunteers and pay an affordable mortgage. Through financial support, volunteering or adding a voice to support affordable housing, everyone can help families achieve the strength, stability and self-reliance they need to build better lives for themselves. Through shelter, we empower. To learn more, visit habitat.org.
