Ryan and Christie will be continuing their work with IJM in 2014. In January, they will be moving to Pampanga, the Philippines.
IJM is a human rights agency that brings rescue and restoration to victims of oppression around the world. In Pampanga, IJM focuses on bringing rescue and healing to victims of sex trafficking. According to UNICEF there are at least 2 million children being exploited in the commercial sex industry. This means that in Pampanga there are young women and girls lured from their homes through lies, coercion or violence and forced into prostitution.
IJM Pampanga has been bringing hope to these girls since 2012 by collaborating with local police to conduct rescue operations, providing critical aftercare, working through the courts to ensure the perpetrators are held accountable under Philippine law, and advocating for reform to take place at the national level.
Christie will be serving as an Aftercare Intern where she will be putting her social work training into practice by assisting in case management, working with IJM's social work partners, and assisting in the development of systems and programs for the aftercare team.
Ryan will be serving as a Legal Fellow where he will assist in case intake, research legal issues and draft memos and briefs, and participate in rescue planning and legal strategy sessions.
