I am fundraising to help find a cure for Multiple Myeloma, a blood cancer. My dad is a patient of Dr. Abonour's and my grandfather also had Multiple Myeloma.

Last year was my first year working with Miles for Myeloma, joining the group to raise awareness by riding bicycles from Angola, IN to Indianapolis. Cycling has always been a passion and learning that I could help others through cycling was rewarding. The pandemic canceled this year's group ride, so on October 17th I am going to ride 72 miles on mountain bike trails in Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, the ride is expected to take about 12 hours. Truth be told, my original goal was 31 miles, but I like big challenges and learned that I might have enough endurance fitness to do something beyond what I originally envisioned. I first became aware of Miles for Myeloma through my wife, we went to watch as a group of supporters, led by Dr. Abonour, ran from Indianapolis, IN to Bloomington, IN. Years later our paths crossed again when my dad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and my wife was instrumental in helping connect my dad with Dr. Abonour. Through Miles for Myeloma I have met other friends whose family members have been affected by Multiple Myeloma and realized that I can help make a difference for others.
Dr. Rafat Abonour can see the day when there’s a cure for multiple myeloma. Where patients once had a grim prognosis, many now live with the disease for decades. He and his team at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center and IU Health lead efforts nationally to improve myeloma research and care for patients in Indiana and beyond.
For fifteen years Miles for Myeloma cyclists - a crew made up of myeloma researchers and medical caregivers, family members of patients and even a few patients themselves – have set out on the annual Miles for Myeloma ride. Though Covid-19 prevents an in-person ride or dinner in 2020, a virtual Miles for Myeloma will still allow us to work together to achieve a big goal to support myeloma research and patient care. This year, we’re asking everyone to join our team and log miles, donate and fundraise to help us reach the Myeloma Million.
Miles for Myeloma has raised more than 6.3 million since 2006. Thanks to donor support, research is focused on better understanding the disease and conducting clinical trials to explore new treatment options. Miles for Myeloma also supports enhanced patient care at IU Health. Myeloma is incurable, so research and enhanced care are our hope for the future.
Gifts to the Miles for Myeloma Fund at the IU Foundation support research at the IU School of Medicine and enhanced patient care at IU Health via the IU Health Foundation. Gifts and donor information will be shared with the IU Health Foundation. If you prefer your information not be shared, please contact Ashleigh Wahl at 317-278-5313 or [email protected]. The Indiana University Foundation solicits tax-deductible private contributions for the benefit of Indiana University and is registered to solicit charitable contributions in all states requiring registration.
