More Info

I was born and raised in Uganda, a country where being yourself as an LGBT person often means risking your life. Growing up, I always knew I was different, but I didn’t have the words to explain it. When I finally came out to myself and a close friend, I felt a sense of freedom, but that freedom came at a price. My identity made me a target in my own community.

Uganda’s laws and societal norms are brutally hostile to the LGBT community. When someone discovered my orientation, my life took a turn for the worse. I was harassed, ostracized, and eventually attacked by people I once called neighbors. The fear of being arrested—or worse—drove me into hiding. I lived in constant anxiety, but even then, I couldn’t bring myself to leave my friends and chosen family behind.

When the threats became unbearable, I made the heartbreaking decision to flee. With the help of a few brave allies, I managed to escape and find refuge in the United States. Here, I’ve found safety and the freedom to be myself, but my heart aches for those I left behind.

My LGBT friends and family in Uganda face daily persecution. Many are in hiding, unable to work or access basic needs. They live in constant fear of discovery. I’ve committed to helping them, but I can’t do it alone.

I’m seeking financial support to rebuild my life here and send aid back to those still trapped in Uganda. Together, we can give hope to people who desperately need it, helping them find safety, access to food and shelter, and one day, perhaps, their freedom.
