Among the most beautiful destinations in Viera Florida, the Viera Wetlands are popular among those who love nature, yet find the rigors of hiking trails and summer temperatures daunting. Viewing from the comfort and safety of an automobile when weather conditions permit vehicular access, visitors have an up-close view of birds, alligators, and other wildlife.
Yet the wetlands are neither a park nor a nature preserve: they are a constructed treatment system designed specifically to polish effluent from the adjacent wastewater reclamation facility. Because of this, public sector funding for the wetlands exists only in relation to their designed wastewater treatment function.
Funding to maintain the roads and ageing infrastructure used by an estimated 200,000 visitors annually relies on the efforts of its volunteer staff and donations in support of continued public access.
