Across the Midwest, public transportation is a big problem for people of all ages and backgrounds who are walking when they would rather be riding. For the homeless, transportation is a luxury they often cannot afford. Lack of public transportation means painful blisters, sore legs and backs, and utter exhaustion. It means missing Doctor’s appointments, job interviews, and losing the ability to find housing.

The Walk for the Homeless is a fundraising event to raise awareness of the transportation barrier, and to provide direct transportation assistance to the homeless.  This assistance gives New Life Evangelistic Center’s Search and Rescue Teams direct interaction with the homeless allowing the love of Jesus to be shared with them.

Leading up to your Walk for the Homeless, you will have the goal of having 10 sponsors pledge $10 for each mile that you walk.  The trail at the Creve Coeur Memorial Lake is 3.8 miles. That means that each person who pledges $10 per mile would give $38 if the walker completes the 3.8 miles on the day of the walk (April 1st). This money will help New Life Evangelistic Center purchase bus tickets to give to the homeless on a weekly basis. With transportation, the homeless can:

  • Look for employment.
  • The bus tickets help them keep their jobs by arriving on time. Once they get their first check, they are encouraged to budget for transportation.
  • On days with extreme weather when there is no shelter available, the bus tickets help the homeless avoid getting frostbite or heat stroke.
  • The bus tickets allow the homeless to be able to maintain contact with family.
  • With bus tickets, the homeless can search for housing.
  • The transportation assistance gives the hope of the gospel through New Life Evangelistic Center’s Search and Rescue ministry.

A Memorable Experience for Families and Students

The Walk with the Homeless is an engaging way for people to take an active role in giving their solidarity and support. We even have an eXtreme version of the Walk for the Homeless for those adventure seekers out there!

These optional actions will make your 3.8-mile walk eXtreme!

  • Bring a backpack full of the items you need to survive for 2-3 days on the streets. (Clothes, non-perishable food, hygiene items).
  • Do NOT bring water with you. Finding water for the homeless whether walking 3.8 miles or more in a day’s time is very difficult! (We will have water, just in case)
  • Wear layers of clothing whether the weather calls for it or not. (Many times, the homeless wear layers as it helps them not have to carry everything in a trash bag or backpack.)
  • Wear uncomfortable shoes. (Often the homeless walk-in worn-out shoes or shoes of the wrong size because that is all they have.
