Driven by a string of home runs, the New York Yankees defeated the Seattle Mariners 7-3 on Wednesday night, ending a two-game losing streak. In the first inning, Aaron Judge opened the score with a two-run blast. Juan Soto scored four runs and hit two home runs to the opposite field, adding to the fireworks. At Yankee Stadium, Alex Verdugo sealed the victory in the eighth inning with a two-run bomb, capping the offensive onslaught.
Anthony Volpe helped the Yankees score more runs by extending his hitting streak to 15 games. He started the game with a single in the first inning and scored on Judge's home run to establish the tone. With five scoreless innings pitched and six strikeouts, Nestor Cortes had a solid outing on the mound. Despite a high pitch count early in the game, Cortes managed to navigate through a tough Mariners lineup, lowering his ERA to 3.29.
The Yankees bullpen was also instrumental in keeping the lead intact. After being activated off the injured list, Tommy Kahnle made a great start to his career by retiring the Mariners in order in the sixth inning. Later innings were handled by Michael Tonkin and Luke Weaver; Weaver gave up a three-run home run to Cal Raleigh but got the last outs. The Mariners had trouble taking advantage of early opportunities; Raleigh's home run in the eighth inning was their only meaningful offensive contribution.
The Mariners fell to 27-23, while the Yankees increased their record to 34-17 and maintained their lead in the AL East. As the series progresses, the Yankees hope to maintain their current momentum.
