1. CHDs are the #1 cause of infant death in the U.S.
2. Thousands of children and babies die each year due to CHDs
3. Every 15 minutes a baby is born with a CHD
4. Thanks to CHD Research, more children are living to see adulthood than ever before
5. CHD research continues to be a very underfunded area of medicine despite its'growing prevalence
6. Most causes for CHD are unknown, however, some may be genetic
7. According to the Center for Disease Control, About 69% of babies born with critical CHDs are expected to survive to 18 years of age.
8. The estimated medical care costs WITH private insurance for an average infant with any CHD was about $23,000 for families out of pocket. Costs were much more higher for infants with a severe CHD.
9. According to the Children's Heart Foundation, Each year approximately 40,000 babies are born in the United States with a congenital heart defect. Thousands of them will not reach their first birthday and thousands more die before they reach adulthood.
10. At this time, it is estimated that there are 2 MILLION CHD survivors in the U.S.

On average, every 15 minutes a baby is born with a Congenital Heart Defect (CHD) Approximately 13 babies/children will die daily from a CHD in the U.S. alone. When considering the worldwide rate, that daily amount is much higher. Of every dollar the government spends on medical funding only a fraction of a penny is directed toward congenital heart defect research. CHD research depends heavily on private funding for new and continued research.
